GENERAL HELP/F.A.Q.

I DON’T HAVE A COPY OF THE BOOK, CAN I TRY THE AR WITHOUT BUYING THE BOOK?
Yes. Click on the title you’re interested in from the list at the top of this help section for instructions on how to download the software and see a demo.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE AUGMENTED REALITY?
To run the AR successfully, you will need a mobile device that meets the minimum system requirements listed below:

This products work with the following:

-Apple devices using iOS version 6.0 and above, including iPhone 3GS and upwards, iPod Touch 4G and upwards, and iPad 2 and upwards. Note: Ocean Monsters, Transformers and My Little Pony apps require iOS 7.0

-Android devices using Android version 4.0 and above, such as the Samsung Galaxy, HTC One AND Samsung Galaxy S4.

I’VE CHECKED AND I HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED. NOW WHAT DO I DO?
Download the free app from the App Store/iTunes for Apple mobile devices, or The Google Play Store for Android mobile devices. The first page of your book will tell you the name of the app you need.

Launch the app and tap the play button in the main menu to start your Augmented Reality experience.

HELPFUL TIPS
-For the best Augmented Reality experience, avoid having too much light reflecting on the page.

-Always try to keep the AR trigger (the page) in view of your device’s camera. If you move it away too far out of view it will lose the link to the software and you will have to start again.

-Try turning or tilting your device to get a different view.

-You can get really close to the action by holding your device closer to the page. Depending on your device’s camera, most AR pages can go as close as 10cm. Experiment with distance to find the best experience.

iRobot

USER AR EXPERIENCES AVAILABLE

There are four different AR experiences (User Modes) the user can activate form the following pages in the book: Super Senses, Almost Human, Robots to the Rescue and Battlin’ Bots.
Open the app and tap the ACTIVATE AR button. You’ll see an INSTRUCTIONS button and (if you swipe the buttons) there are four user mode buttons – BUILD A BOT, LIFE SIZE, FLY A DRONE and BATTLIN’ BOTS.

AR-1: BUILD A BOT (Super Senses)
Tap the BUILD A BOT button and you’ll get two buttons to select from – BUILD and WALK. If this is the first time in this mode you’ll need to your robot first, so tap the BUILD button.

There are 5 memory slots to keep your robot builds in. Select one and follow these guidelines:

  • Select your basic robot shape – Strong, Tall or Light.
  • You can select a choice of body parts by double tapping any of the Head, Arms, Body or Leg sections on the central robot.
  • Choose from the options on the left hand panel by single tapping, the central robot will change with each selection.
  • Tap a colour from the right hand panel. If you want more colours, scroll the colour pallet up and down.
  • When you’ve decided on one body part, double click another and keep going until you’ve built your robot.

There are 3 white buttons at the top of the screen.

  • The button top left is the return button that takes you back to the previous screen.
  • If you want to see your build in closer detail or from a different angle, tap the 3D at the top right of the screen. You can then pinch and zoom, or swipe to rotate the robot.
  • In the 3D mode, the same button changes to 2D – tap this and your robot reverts to the default size and position.
  • Tapping the top right button (with the memory slot image) saves your robot build, over-writing any previously saved robot build.

When you’re happy with your build, tap the return button twice to take you back to the WALK button. Tap this to access one of your previously saved robots - your device camera will automatically activate. View the book open at the Super Senses pagesand your robot will appear to be standing on the book! Use the joystick to walk, the action button for poses, and the camera to take a picture of your robot!

AR-2: LIFE SIZE (Almost Human)
Real robots can be very big, some larger than an adult, so we recommend that you might want to try this in a very large room or even outside in a large, open and safe location.

Tap the LIFE SIZE button and the device camera will activate automatically. View the book open at the Almost Human pages and you’ll see a robot standing on the pages with a selection of buttons around the edges of the screen.

  • You need to remember that in Life Size mode the choice of location is really important – it’s best to place the book flat on the ground. Avoid spaces that are confined, restricted or have a lot of movement in the background, and try to find somewhere that has a lot of details, shapes and colours.
  • Ideally, the ground will also have details, shapes and colour variations in it – the more detail in the background the easier it is for the AR software to create its own reference points.
  • Only when you are a good distance away from the book do you then tap the + button on the bottom right of the screen and the robot will immediately spring to life in full size. Try and make sure that when the robot is enlarged you can see the whole robot within your device screen.
  • If your robot is too big for your screen you could try walking backwards some more until it fits but we find its actually easier to simply start again by pressing the – button on the bottom right of the screen, walking back to your book and holding your device over the activation pages and starting again.

AR-3: FLY A DRONE (Robots to the Rescue)
Tap the FLY A DRONE button and get to select one of 3 different drones. All the AR drones work in the same way so it doesn’t matter which one you tap first. The device camera will activate automatically. View the book open at the Robots to the Rescue pages and you’ll see your drone sitting on a Launch Pad on the pages with a selection of CONTROL buttons on a panel running along the bottom of the screen.

There are two larger buttons on the outsides of the panel and three smaller buttons between them. Start by learning to fly your drone - you’ll need to follow this sequence:

  • Tap the small button on the left with an upside down V. The rotors will begin to turn and the drone will rise off the launch pad then hover above it.
  • You can then use the two outside JOYSTICK buttons to fly your drone. The LEFT joystick controls direction – move the joystick left to fly the drone left, right for right, up for away from you, and down for towards you. The RIGHT joystick controls height – move up to fly the drone higher, move down to fly lower.
  • Try flying close by to start with, then start to explore further away but always try and keep your drone in view. Try flying the drone towards you, see how close you can get it to you, or to fly passed you either above or below. We find it best to fly your drone when you’re standing up.

AR-4: BATTLIN' BOTS

Using the latest AR technology two users can now interact with each other’s robots by using two separate mobile devices. We call this a Dual User mode - some people find this slightly harder to get started if they haven’t already tried any of the other robot AR experiences before so we suggest if you haven’t already tried Build a Bot or Life Size yet you should try these first.

IMPORTANT - before starting any Dual User mode it is important that both users are using the same WiFi connection and both viewing the same activation pages from the same book.

Dual User mode allows users to have multi-platform, multi-device combinations – i.e. Apple devices will work with Android devices, and smart-phones will work equally well with tablets.

For Battlin’ Bots to work successfully it’s important that both users follow the correct sequence of events:

  • The first user taps the BATTLIN’ BOTS button, selects their robot by sliding through the options at the bottom of the screen and then tapping the PLAY button in the top right corner of the screen to open the next screen.
  • The first user will not be able to choose a friend, they must tap the PLAY button in the bottom right of the screen. This automatically opens the device camera. Viewing the Battlin’ Bots spread will activate their choice of robot on the page standing on a blue ring. This ring is the health bar. The first user is now ready to battle.
  • The second user then follows the same steps until they have selected their robot and tapped the play button to take them to the screen to choose a friend.
  • They should then see the first users device highlighted in yellow appearing in the light blue box. Tapping this will open the device camera and viewing the same activation pages as the first user will activate their robot, this time standing on a Red health bar.

BATTLING DINOSAURS
To run the Augmented Reality animations, all the user needs is a copy of the Battling Dinosaurs book, a mobile device that meets our minimum requirements (see the listing at the start of this help page), and the iBattleAR app, available from the Apple iTunes or Google Play stores.

Helpful Tips
For the best Augmented Reality experience:

  • Place the book on a flat surface, open the book at the ACTIVATION PAGE featuring the dinosaur or AR experience you want to activate.
  • Make sure the pages of the book are as flat as possible.
  • Avoid having too much light reflecting off the pages of the book. Good general lighting in the room or outside where you place the book ensures better results.
  • Try to avoid having too much movement and changing light in the background.
  • Having lots of lines, strong shapes and contrast in the background helps the AR software create good reference points.
  • When activating a dinosaur, point your device camera at the activation pages in the book making sure you view both the left and right hand pages.
  • You can get really close to the AR dinosaurs by moving the device close up or view it from different angles. Experiment with distance or walking around it to find the best views.
  • If you lose connection with a dinosaur it’s much easier to simply start again rather than trying to recover it.

IN-APP-PURCHASES
The iBattleAR app comes with 5 unlocked dinosaurs with a further 8 dinosaurs available with a one-off In-App-Purchase. You can either choose 1 of the 2 dinosaur packs, each with 4 dinosaurs, or you could purchase all 8 dinosaurs included in the Monster Pack at a special price.

Pack 1 unlocks the following dinosaurs: Utahraptor, Spinosaurus, Megalosaurus and Albertosaurus.

Pack 2 unlocks: Gigantosaurus, Allosaurus, Maposaurus and Carcharodontosaurus.

All In-App-Purchase options are available by tapping the shopping trolley icon on the main menu and completing a simple mathematical sum which helps avoid unwanted or accidental purchases.

USER AR EXPERIENCES AVAILABLE
There are two different AR experiences (User Modes) the user can activate from the pages in the book: Single User and Battle Mode.

Single User mode is the easiest of the two User Modes so it’s best to try this first. By pointing the mobile device camera at one of the unlocked Dinosaur pages in the book, the user will activate a fully animated 3D CGI dinosaur that will appear to be alive (with small movements) standing on the page of the book. If the dinosaur page shows a revolving padlock this indicates that this dinosaur needs to be purchased first. The 5 unlocked dinosaurs that come free with the app are: Tyrannosaurus Rex, Cryolophosaurus, Velociraptor, Herrerasaurus and Deinonychus.

Battle Mode uses the latest AR technology to allow users to battle with each other’s dinosaur by using two separate mobile devices. We call this a Dual User mode - some people find this slightly harder to get started if they haven’t already tried any of the other  AR experiences before so we suggest you try Single User mode first.

 JURASSIC WORLD
By combining the five Activation Pages in our Jurassic World: Where Dinosaurs Come to Life book with the leading Augmented Reality software in our iCarltonAR app, users will be able to experience moving, breathing and roaring Jurassic World dinosaurs at home.

HELPFUL TIPS
For the best Augmented Reality experience:

  • Place the book on a flat surface, open at the ACTIVATION PAGE featuring the dinosaur you want to activate. Note there are five Jurassic World dinosaurs you can activate: Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Raptor (there are four Raptors to choose from) and Indominus Rex. Make sure the pages of the book are as flat as possible.
  • Avoid having too much light reflecting off the pages of the book.
  • Good general lighting in the room or outside where you place the book ensures better results.
  • Try to avoid having too much movement and changing light in the background.
  • Having lots of lines, strong shapes and contrast in the background helps the AR software create good reference points.
  • You can get really close to the AR dinosaur by moving the device close up to dinosaur or view it from different angles. Experiment with distance or walking around it to find the best experience.
  • When walking away from the book, or around your dinosaur, always try and make slow movements and keep the mobile device as still as possible.
  • If you lose connection with a dinosaur it’s much easier to simply start again rather than trying to recover a dinosaur.
  • Make sure your audio is switched on and the volume turned up loud!

Problems linking devices in Dual User mode:

  • Check both devices are using the same WiFi connection.
  • If you’re using a WiFi connection shared by a lot of people it’s possible the WiFi settings do not allow users to see each other’s devices. It may be best to try at home.

Problems with Life Size dinosaurs:

  • Poor reference points will almost always be the reason you get problems with the Life-size AR dinosaurs. It’s important to try and get backgrounds with lots of shapes, lines and contrast and little or no distracting movement. But always remember to stay in a safe place away from cars, steps or drops that may be dangerous.
  • If you place the book open on a large, plain floor or ground with no real reference points you may keep losing the dinosaur or the dinosaur starts moving towards you as you walk away from the book. Try moving the book to a better position, or maybe try adding objects to the scene i.e. stones, small objects or bags to act as reference points.

Problems with anything else:

  • We want you to get the most out of this book and app AR experience – we’ve worked hard to produce something that we think will bring a lot of fun to anyone who loves not just dinosaurs but taking photos with their mobile devices and interacting with their family and friends. If you still have problems the drop us a line at the email address below and one of our team will get back to you as soon as we can and we will update our help pages if it’s something we’ve missed.

Use the buttons on the screen to walk the bots around the room, to interact with them and to take photos to save to your photo album.

To activate BATTLE MODE the two users need to choose one Autobot character and one Decepticon character. When both bots are activated users will see an ATTACK button (star) and a DEFEND button (shield). Tap these when up close to your opponent.

Each bot will have a HEALTH BAR in the form of a ring appearing under their feet. The winner is the first bot to reduce their opponents health bar to zero.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO MUSIC

GETTING STARTED – HINTS AND TIPS

Download the free MusicGuide app from www.apple.com/itunes or www.android.com/apps to your mobile device.

Launch the app to open the home page. Tap a button (INSTRUMENTS, ORCHESTRA or QUIZ) to start your musical experience.

The device camera will activate, point the camera at pages 92-93, ensuring the whole double page spread is in view. Once the page has triggered the app, you do not need to view the pages any more until you want to try another button.

WHAT SHOULD I SEE? WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

Press the INSTRUMENTS button to:
Scroll through the list of 25 instruments and press on one to select it. Zoom in and out and rotate each instrument 360 degrees by touching the screen. Press the single note button to listen and watch the instrument play. Press the play button to hear the instrument play a tune.

Press the ORCHESTRA button to:
See if you can place each instrument into its correct position in the orchestra. Once you’ve completed each orchestral group you’ll be able to listen to each section playing a theme from Benjamin Britten’s The Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra. When you’ve correctly placed all 25 instruments you’ll be able to play the full piece and listen to the whole orchestra playing together.

Press the QUIZ button to:
Listen to the sound and decide which instrument it is – you have a choice of four. Work your way through 25 questions over six levels. Can you score full marks?

PROBLEM SOLVING

I HAVE INSTALLED THE APP AND IT IS RUNNING BUT I CAN’T ACTIVATE THE THREE SECTIONS. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Ensure that you are pointing your camera at pages 92 and 93 in the book. This will trigger the three individual sections.

I CAN GET THE SECTIONS TO START WORKING, BUT THEY KEEP DISAPPEARING. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Try the following: don’t make sudden movements when holding your device above the book, avoid too much light reflection on the page, change the distance between the page and your device, or tilt your device so that it faces the page more.

CAN I VIEW THE INSTRUMENTS MORE CLOSELY TO SEE THE DETAILS?
Yes, try pinching the screen to zoom in and out.

CAN I VIEW THE ANIMATION FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES?
Yes, experiment by moving your forefinger around the screen.

SHOULD I EXPECT TO HEAR SOUND WHEN I WATCH THE ANIMATIONS?
Yes, but only when you press certain buttons. Make sure your audio is switched on and the volume is turned up.
